Alice Weidel has been elected as the top candidate for the AfD in Baden-Württemberg for the 2025 Bundestag elections, securing nearly 87% of the votes at a party meeting in Ulm.
Despite her strong support, the event was marked by internal party tensions and significant public protests.
Dirk Spaniel, a former state leader and critic of Weidel, announced his departure from the party following her election.
Meanwhile, around 2,000 people demonstrated against the AfD meeting, organized by groups advocating for democracy and diversity.
The protests remained largely peaceful, although tensions were noted with a right-wing media activist filming the event.
The AfD continues to be scrutinized by German authorities for its extremist tendencies.
