Allianz CEO Proposes Sick Pay Reform

Published: 2025-01-06

Allianz CEO Oliver Bäte has proposed reintroducing a "waiting day" for sick leave, where employees would not receive pay for their first day of illness.

This measure, abolished in Germany in the 1970s, aims to reduce costs for employers and curb what Bäte describes as a high rate of absenteeism.

German workers reportedly average 20 sick days per year, compared to the EU average of eight.

Bäte argues that the current system creates financial strain, with employers and health insurers spending billions annually on sick pay.

He also suggests tax relief for lower and middle-income workers to offset the impact of such changes.

Critics, however, may view this proposal as a burden on employees, especially those in precarious jobs.

The debate highlights broader concerns about the sustainability of Germany's social systems.
