Germany is experiencing a significant decline in birth rates, with Bavaria hitting its lowest point in years.
In 2023, the average number of children per woman in Bavaria dropped to 1.37, down from 1.49 in 2022. This trend is mirrored nationwide, with Germany's overall birth rate falling to 1.35 children per woman, a 7% decrease from the previous year.
The decline is particularly pronounced in university towns, where many young women prioritize education and career over starting families.
Interestingly, women with foreign citizenship in Bavaria had a higher birth rate (1.67) compared to German women (1.30).
The downward trend in birth rates has been observed since 2017, briefly interrupted only in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
