Brandenburg's Political Puzzle: SPD's Coalition Dilemma

Published: 2024-09-24

In Brandenburg, the recent state elections have left the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in a challenging position despite their victory.

SPD's Dietmar Woidke, who secured 30.9% of the votes, faces the dilemma of forming a government without a clear majority.

The newly established Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which garnered 13.5% of the votes, has become a crucial player in the coalition talks.

The traditional coalition with the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Greens is no longer viable, as the Greens failed to meet the electoral threshold.

The CDU, with only 12.1% of the votes, also cannot form a majority with the SPD alone.

The far-right AfD, which secured 29.2% of the votes, is excluded from coalition considerations by other parties.

As a result, the SPD is compelled to negotiate with the BSW, which holds significant sway in the new political landscape.

These negotiations are expected to be complex, given the BSW's strong stance on foreign policy issues, including opposition to arms deliveries to Ukraine and the presence of US missiles in Germany.
