Cable Disruptions Stir Nordic Concerns

Published: 2024-12-04

In Finland, two internet cables were damaged, causing significant disruptions.

The cables, which connect Finland to Sweden, were reportedly damaged due to construction work, affecting around 6,000 private and 100 business customers.

Finnish authorities, along with the company Global Connect, are investigating the incidents.

Despite initial suspicions of sabotage, Finnish police have stated there is no evidence of criminal activity, attributing the damage to excavation work.

Meanwhile, in the Baltic Sea, the Chinese freighter 'Yi Peng 3' is under scrutiny for suspected sabotage of data cables.

The ship is being monitored by Danish, German, and Swedish naval patrols, but legal complexities under international maritime law limit actions against it.

The situation highlights challenges in addressing potential sabotage under current international laws.
