Drowning Deaths Surge in Germany

Published: 2024-08-08

In Germany, the number of drowning incidents has surged in 2024, with at least 253 people reported dead in the first seven months, marking a 35-person increase from the previous year.

Rivers remain the most dangerous, accounting for 92 fatalities, while lakes and seas also saw rising numbers.

The German Lifesaving Society (DLRG) warns that many individuals underestimate the risks associated with swimming, especially in flowing waters.

Notably, older adults and men are disproportionately affected, with health issues often contributing to accidents.

The DLRG emphasizes the importance of swimming in supervised areas and wearing life jackets during water sports to enhance safety.

Climate change is also cited as a factor, leading to more frequent water-related activities and increased drowning risks.
