A former advisor to the North Rhine-Westphalia government has been sentenced for fraud after posing as a professor without any legitimate academic qualifications.
The 48-year-old man, who had been advising on Islamic issues, was found guilty of forgery and deception, receiving a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of €12,000. His fraudulent activities came to light in 2021, leading to the termination of his government role.
Despite his lack of formal qualifications, he had built a reputation as an expert and was involved in significant discussions, even advising ministers.
The court highlighted his desire for recognition as a driving factor behind his deceitful actions.
The verdict is not yet final, and he remains presumed innocent until all legal proceedings are complete.
