First Mpox Variant Case in Germany

Published: 2024-10-22

Germany has reported its first case of the new Mpox virus variant, known as Clade Ib.

The infection was detected in a 33-year-old patient in Cologne, who likely contracted the virus in an East African country.

The patient is currently in isolation and receiving treatment.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has stated that there is no increased risk to the general population in Germany, although they are monitoring the situation closely.

The World Health Organization had previously declared an international health emergency due to the spread of this variant in Africa.

Symptoms of Mpox include fever, headaches, muscle pain, and a distinctive rash.

Vaccination is available but is recommended only for high-risk groups.
