German Census 2022 Reshuffles State Finances

Published: 2024-07-09

The 2022 German census has revealed unexpected population shifts, leading to significant financial implications for various states.

North Rhine-Westphalia emerges as a major beneficiary, anticipating an additional 580 million euros for 2022 and 2023 combined.

Conversely, states like Berlin, Hamburg, and Hessen face substantial losses, with Berlin projecting up to 550 million euros less annually by 2028. The census results, showing 1.4 million fewer residents in Germany than previously estimated, are reshaping the country's financial landscape.

While some states like Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia expect gains, others like Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt brace for reduced federal funding.

These shifts in population figures directly impact the distribution of tax revenues and federal allocations among states.
