German Leaders Debate Asylum Policy Reform

Published: 2024-10-24

The annual Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz (MPK) is underway in Leipzig, where German state leaders are discussing significant reforms in asylum policy.

The conference, chaired by Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer, is focusing on revisiting the 1993 asylum compromise to address current migration challenges.

Kretschmer advocates for reducing asylum seeker numbers to 30,000 annually, a significant decrease from the nearly 200,000 applications this year.

Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner supports constitutional changes to limit migration and enhance border controls.

The conference aims to find consensus across party lines to tackle irregular migration effectively.

Results from these discussions are expected to be announced on Friday.
