German Parties Agree on Fair Campaign

Published: 2024-12-22

Major German political parties, including SPD, CDU/CSU, Greens, FDP, and Left, have signed a Fairness Agreement for the 2025 Bundestag election campaign.

The pact aims to ensure respectful debates, avoid disinformation, and reject extremist rhetoric.

It also includes rules for fair digital campaigning, such as labeling AI-generated content.

The AfD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) refused to join, with BSW criticizing the agreement as insincere.

SPD's Matthias Miersch, who proposed the initiative, emphasized its importance in combating polarization and promoting democratic values.

The agreement builds on a previous code of conduct but introduces stricter measures to protect the integrity of the election process.
