Two German pilots faced a life-threatening situation when their Piper PA-46 Malibu had to make an emergency landing in the icy waters off Greenland.
On August 1, 2024, while flying from Canada to Narsarsuaq, the pilots issued a "Mayday" call at 12:17 PM local time after experiencing problems with their aircraft.
Fortunately, they managed to escape to an inflatable life raft just before their plane sank in the frigid Labrador Sea.
The Danish Arctic Command quickly responded, deploying a Bombardier Challenger 600 to locate the downed aircraft and a patrol boat, Triton, to rescue the pilots.
Within 30 minutes, the rescue team reached the men and brought them safely to a local hospital in Qaqortoq, where they were reported to be unharmed.
This dramatic rescue highlights the importance of quick response in emergency situations over treacherous waters.
