German authorities have thwarted a potential terrorist attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin, arresting a Libyan national suspected of planning the assault.

The suspect, identified as a 28-year-old asylum seeker, was apprehended in Bernau, Brandenburg, following a tip-off from foreign intelligence services.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office accuses him of supporting the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization.

Searches were conducted in Bernau and Sankt Augustin, where evidence was collected, although no weapons or explosives were found.

The Israeli ambassador expressed gratitude to German security forces for their vigilance, highlighting the ongoing threat of Islamist terrorism in the region.

The suspect is set to appear before a federal court to determine if he will remain in custody.
