Germany is considering reintroducing a healthcare fee to address overcrowded clinics and reduce unnecessary doctor visits.
The proposed €20 fee per visit, supported by CDU, CSU, and SPD, aims to curb "doctor hopping" and promote responsible use of medical resources.
Critics recall the failure of a similar fee from 2004 to 2012, which disproportionately affected low-income patients and created administrative burdens.
Advocates point to Sweden's successful model, where fees have streamlined healthcare access and improved patient-doctor interactions.
Additionally, a "primary doctor system" is being proposed to direct patients to general practitioners before specialists, with penalties for bypassing the system.
While the plans promise cost savings and efficiency, concerns about fairness and implementation remain.
