Germany is set to increase its minimum wage to over €15 by 2026, as proposed by Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil.
This move aligns with new EU directives requiring the minimum wage to be 60% of the median wage.
Currently, the minimum wage stands at €12.41, with a planned rise to €12.82 in 2025. The proposal aims to benefit around 6 million workers, addressing concerns that previous increases have not kept pace with inflation.
However, the plan faces criticism from the FDP and employer groups, who argue it could undermine wage negotiations and harm the economy.
The Minimum Wage Commission, which has been divided over past decisions, is tasked with implementing these changes by mid-2025.
