Germany Marks 35 Years Since Berlin Wall Fell

Published: 2024-11-10

On November 9, Germany commemorates the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a pivotal moment in history that marked the end of division and oppression.

The central ceremony in Berlin saw leaders like President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz urging the nation to keep the spirit of 1989 alive.

The day is remembered as a "European victory," highlighting the triumph of freedom and democracy.

Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner emphasized the importance of freedom, stating, "Without freedom, everything else is nothing.

" The anniversary also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives at the Wall, with at least 140 people killed between 1961 and 1989. The event included a "Concert for Freedom" and an open-air installation tracing the Wall's path, symbolizing hope and unity.
