Germany Urged to Boost Military Spending

Published: 2024-08-01

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has called for increased military spending, urging the country to exceed NATO's two percent defense spending target.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Security Institute in Honolulu, he highlighted threats from Russia and rising tensions due to China's ambitions.

Currently, two-thirds of NATO allies meet the two percent goal, while Germany has increased its defense budget by 150 percent over the past decade.

However, Pistorius believes that the planned increase of just 1.25 billion euros in the upcoming budget is insufficient.

He emphasized the importance of Germany's partnership with the U.

S. and its role in NATO's eastern defense, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Pistorius also warned that without additional funding, the military could face an investment halt in the next three years.
