Germany's electricity system is undergoing significant reform as the government aims for a complete transition to renewable energy sources by 2045. The Federal Ministry of Economics, led by Minister Robert Habeck, has proposed a new capacity mechanism to be implemented by 2028. This mechanism will ensure backup power from flexible gas plants and energy storage during "dark doldrums" when wind and solar energy are insufficient.
The plan also includes incentives for electric vehicle users to charge their cars when electricity is cheaper.
The government emphasizes the need for a secure, affordable, and climate-neutral power system, with public consultations on the proposals running until the end of August.
