Germany's Nuclear Waste Search Delayed by Decades

Published: 2024-08-07

The search for a permanent storage site for high-level radioactive waste in Germany may take over 40 years longer than initially planned, according to a report from the Freiburg-based Öko-Institut.

The report, commissioned by the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), suggests that a decision on a site may not be reached until 2074 under ideal conditions.

The Federal Environment Ministry acknowledged that the timeline had already been extended, with previous estimates indicating a decision could be made by 2046 or even 2068. Currently, 27,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste are stored in 16 interim facilities across Germany.

The search process is complex, as it requires finding a location that can safely contain the waste for one million years, and public involvement is mandated by law.

The ministry is optimistic about potential procedural optimizations that could expedite the search, but significant challenges remain.
