Germany's Security Package Compromise

Published: 2024-10-11

In response to the tragic knife attack in Solingen, Germany's coalition government has reached a compromise on a new security package.

The package, initially proposed to enhance national security, faced resistance within the Bundestag, particularly from SPD and Green party members.

Key elements include stricter weapons laws, especially concerning knives, and limited biometric data use by security agencies.

The controversial proposal to cut social benefits for certain asylum seekers, known as Dublin cases, was softened.

Benefits will only be cut if there are no legal or practical barriers to their departure.

The package aims to balance security needs with humanitarian concerns, and is set for discussion in the Bundestag and Bundesrat next week.
