Green Party Faces Leadership Exodus

Published: 2024-09-26

The German Green Party is facing a significant internal shake-up as both the party's main leadership and the youth wing's board have announced their resignations.

Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour, co-chairs of the Green Party, will step down in November, paving the way for a new leadership to guide the party into the next federal election.

In a parallel move, the entire board of the Green Youth, led by Svenja Appuhn and Katharina Stolla, has declared their intention to leave the party, citing a divergence in political strategy and ideology.

They plan to establish a new leftist youth organization, emphasizing class-oriented politics and social issues.

This wave of resignations highlights internal disagreements over the party's direction, particularly concerning military spending and asylum policies.

Meanwhile, Robert Habeck, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, sees this as an opportunity for renewal and has expressed his willingness to take on more responsibility, potentially as a chancellor candidate in the upcoming elections.
