Robert Habeck, the Green Party's chancellor candidate, has announced he will no longer seek a leadership role within the party following disappointing election results.
The Greens secured only 11.6% of the vote, a drop from 2021, and are unlikely to play a role in the next government.
Despite this, Habeck praised the party's campaign and its ability to gain 42,000 new members since the coalition's collapse.
His decision has sparked mixed reactions, with over 300,000 people signing a petition urging him to stay in a prominent position.
Meanwhile, Annalena Baerbock, the outgoing foreign minister, is seen as a potential leader in the party's reorganization.
The Greens now face the challenge of redefining their role in opposition.
