Hungary Cancels German Foreign Minister's Visit Amid Controversy

Published: 2024-07-06

Hungary has abruptly canceled a planned meeting between its Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, scheduled for Monday in Budapest.

The German Foreign Office expressed disappointment, stating that a 'serious and honest personal conversation' would have been important given Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's unexpected and uncoordinated visit to Moscow.

Orban's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just days after Hungary assumed the EU Council presidency, has sparked criticism from EU and NATO partners.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Orban's unilateral action could undermine the EU's credibility.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that Orban traveled to Putin as Hungary's Prime Minister, not as an EU representative.
