Investigation of Left Party Politician Shocks Thüringen

Published: 2024-08-07

In Thüringen, a member of the Left Party is under investigation for possession and procurement of child pornography, just weeks before the state elections on September 1. Following the lifting of the politician's immunity, the Erfurt public prosecutor's office conducted searches at the member's office in the state parliament, two constituency offices, and their private residence, seizing numerous pieces of evidence, including computers and data storage devices.

Leading figures in the Left Party, including Minister-President Bodo Ramelow, expressed shock and called for a thorough investigation.

Ramelow stated that the accused must suspend all duties until the matter is resolved, emphasizing that if the allegations are confirmed, severe consequences will follow.

The party is currently facing a challenging election campaign, with recent polls showing a significant drop in support compared to previous years.
