In Germany, over 1.3 million retirees continue to work despite being eligible for pensions, according to a report from the government.
Many of these seniors take on mini-jobs, with about one million working in such positions as of December 31, 2022. While some argue that low pension amounts force retirees to seek additional income, a report from the Institute for Employment Research suggests that many older workers are motivated by enjoyment, purpose, and social interaction rather than financial necessity.
On average, retirees with at least 35 years of contributions received around 1,400 euros in pension payments in 2022. The situation raises concerns about the adequacy of pensions in Germany, as highlighted by Left Party politician Matthias W.
Birkwald.
