Migration Talks Collapse in Germany

Published: 2024-09-10

The recent migration talks between Germany's Union party and the federal government have ended without agreement.

The Union, led by Thorsten Frei, criticized the government's proposals for not addressing the need for increased border rejections, focusing instead on speeding up existing procedures.

The Union had insisted on discussing comprehensive border rejections, which the government did not accommodate.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz accused the government of being divided and ineffective in handling irregular migration challenges.

The government's plan involves the Bundespolizei checking if another EU member state is responsible for asylum seekers, using the Eurodac database, and potentially detaining individuals to prevent them from disappearing.

The aim is to enforce the Dublin Regulation, which mandates that asylum seekers must apply in the first EU country they enter.

The Union remains critical, arguing that the government's approach does not adequately address the issue of irregular migration.
