Rain Can't Dampen Cologne's Carnival Spirit

Published: 2024-11-12

Despite the November rain and a tense political climate, the Carnival season kicked off in Cologne and other Rhineland cities with vibrant celebrations.

Thousands of revelers, undeterred by the weather, donned costumes and gathered to mark the start of the 'fifth season' at 11:11 AM.

The demand for makeshift rain gear, like plastic bags, was high as people embraced the festivities.

Cologne's Mayor, Henriette Reker, emphasized the Carnival's timely arrival, offering much-needed energy amidst global crises.

This year, Cologne proudly introduced its first queer Dreigestirn, reflecting the city's inclusive spirit.

The celebrations, though lively, were marked by heightened security, with over 1,400 officers ensuring a safe environment.

Participants expressed the Carnival's importance as a joyful escape from the world's troubles, highlighting its role in promoting tolerance and unity.
