Saxony District Administrator Resigns Amid Threats

Published: 2024-07-23

Dirk Neubauer, the independent district administrator of Mittelsachsen, has announced his resignation due to threats from far-right groups.

In a personal statement on social media, Neubauer cited ongoing personal attacks and a lack of political support as key reasons for his decision.

Elected in 2022 with backing from the SPD, Left Party, and Greens, Neubauer expressed frustration over the conservative majority in the region, which he believes hinders progress on important issues like energy transition and rural mobility.

He emphasized the need for a welcoming and open-minded community to address the region's challenges.

His resignation highlights the growing intimidation faced by local politicians in Saxony, as noted by state officials who condemned the threats against him.

Neubauer plans to establish a consulting firm after stepping down.
