Scholz Sees Immigration Law as Historic Opportunity

Published: 2024-08-20

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has highlighted the significance of Germany's new immigration law, describing it as a "historic opportunity" for the country.

Speaking at a naturalization ceremony in Bremen, Scholz emphasized the importance of becoming a successful immigration nation to secure Germany's future growth.

The new law, effective since June, reduces the residency requirement for citizenship from eight to five years, with the possibility of obtaining citizenship in three years for those with exceptional integration achievements.

Scholz expressed satisfaction with the increasing number of immigrants seeking German citizenship, noting the rise in applications in Bremen.

He also addressed the challenges within the coalition government, acknowledging the difficulties in decision-making but urging for better collaboration and communication among the parties.

Scholz called for a focus on the coalition's achievements and the need for good governance and behavior amidst the complex political landscape.
