SPD and Union Edge Closer to Election Deal

Published: 2024-11-10

SPD parliamentary leader Rolf Mützenich has proposed a package deal to the Union, suggesting an earlier election date in exchange for passing key legislative projects.

This move comes after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition collapse, with Mützenich emphasizing the need for agreements on projects like child benefits and industrial relief.

The Union, led by Friedrich Merz, insists on Scholz addressing the vote of confidence first.

The SPD aims to finalize these legislative priorities before the proposed January 15 confidence vote, potentially leading to elections by March.

Both parties are negotiating to ensure a smooth electoral process, despite concerns over logistical challenges raised by the Federal Election Commissioner.
