SPD parliamentary leader Rolf Mützenich has called for stricter measures to prevent abuse of Germany's Bürgergeld welfare system.
He emphasized the program's goal of helping people re-enter the workforce but acknowledged concerns about misuse.
Mützenich suggested some individuals, including Ukrainian refugees, may have unfairly benefited from the system.
The Bürgergeld, introduced in 2023 to replace Hartz IV, has faced criticism for being too lenient.
Mützenich also expressed openness to a future coalition with the FDP, despite past tensions.
Germany is now gearing up for new elections on February 23, following the Bundestag's dissolution.
