SPD Faces Internal Struggles Ahead of Election

Published: 2024-10-09

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany is grappling with internal challenges as it prepares for the upcoming Bundestag election in 2025. Manuela Schwesig, Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has called for Chancellor Olaf Scholz to take a more assertive stance on key issues to improve the party's standing.

Amidst declining poll numbers and internal debates, Schwesig emphasized the need for Scholz to clearly communicate his positions to the public.

The recent resignation of SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert has added to the party's turbulence, though Matthias Miersch has been swiftly appointed as his successor.

Miersch has pledged full support to Scholz, who is expected to be the SPD's candidate for Chancellor.

The SPD is under pressure to resolve its internal conflicts and present a united front to regain voter confidence.
