SPD Members Challenge Migration Policy

Published: 2024-09-30

A significant number of SPD members have voiced their concerns over the German government's recent shift towards a stricter migration policy.

Following a terrorist attack in Solingen, the government has implemented tougher border controls and deportations, sparking a heated debate within the SPD.

Over 500 members, including prominent figures like Gesine Schwan, have signed an open letter urging the party to uphold asylum rights and human rights, warning against adopting right-wing narratives.

The letter criticizes measures such as border rejections and stigmatizing entire groups as potential terrorists.

In response, 35 SPD parliamentarians have expressed their support for the letter, emphasizing the need to separate security issues from migration policy.

They argue that the SPD should not normalize extremist rhetoric and should instead focus on humane asylum policies.
