Steinmeier Seeks Forgiveness in Warsaw

Published: 2024-07-31

On the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier publicly asked for forgiveness for the atrocities committed by Germany in Poland during World War II.

Speaking at a memorial event in Warsaw, he emphasized Germany's historical responsibility and the importance of remembering the past.

Steinmeier met with elderly veterans of the uprising before addressing a large audience alongside Polish President Andrzej Duda.

The uprising, which began on August 1, 1944, aimed to liberate Warsaw from Nazi occupation but resulted in brutal repression, with around 200,000 people killed.

Steinmeier acknowledged the painful history shared between Poland and Germany but expressed hope for a future of cooperation, particularly in supporting Ukraine amid current geopolitical tensions.
