Nikolas Häckel, the mayor of Sylt, has been ousted following a public vote.

Despite recovering from a burnout and asserting his capability to serve, Häckel faced criticism for his leadership, leading to a vote where 34.9% of eligible voters supported his removal.

The decision was driven by allegations of poor communication and administrative shortcomings.

Häckel, who has served since 2015, expressed no surprise at the outcome and plans to spend time in a monastery.

The municipality must elect a new mayor within six months.
