A 27-year-old Syrian man has been arrested in Bavaria for allegedly planning an attack on German soldiers in Hof, Upper Franconia.

Authorities believe the suspect intended to use two machetes to kill as many soldiers as possible during their lunch break in the city center.

The weapons had already been purchased by the suspect, who is thought to adhere to a radical Islamic ideology.

The attack was reportedly aimed at causing public fear and drawing attention.

The man is currently in custody, suspected of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.

Investigations by the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism are ongoing, and the presumption of innocence remains until proven guilty.
