Union Demands Stronger Domestic Violence Laws

Published: 2024-12-09

The Union party in Germany has outlined three key requirements for an effective domestic violence protection law, criticizing the current proposal by the SPD and Greens as insufficient.

Andrea Lindholz, deputy chair of the Union faction, emphasized the urgent need to address the rising violence against women, which saw a 5.6% increase last year.

The Union's proposed "three-level approach" includes securing funding for women's shelters, implementing electronic ankle monitors for offenders, and ensuring swift legal action against perpetrators.

The SPD and Greens aim to pass their law before the upcoming elections, but the Union argues that more comprehensive measures are needed.

The debate continues as the proposed law faces time constraints and political disagreements.
