Union Wins, SPD Faces Historic Loss

Germany's 2025 Bundestag election has reshaped the political landscape.

The CDU/CSU Union, led by Friedrich Merz, emerged as the strongest party with nearly 29% of the vote, while the far-right AfD doubled its 2021 results to secure second place with 20%.

The SPD suffered a historic defeat, dropping to just 16%, its worst performance ever.

The Greens and FDP also lost ground, with the FDP falling below the 5% threshold, prompting Christian Lindner to announce his exit from politics.

Meanwhile, the Left Party rebounded to 8-9%, and the newly formed BSW hovers around the 5% mark.

Voter turnout soared to 83-84%, the highest since reunification.

Merz now faces the challenge of forming a coalition, ruling out any partnership with the AfD.
