Published: 2025-01-15

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has been awarded the prestigious Karlspreis 2025 for her leadership during challenging times.

The award recognizes her efforts in uniting Europe amidst external threats like Russia's aggression and internal challenges from populism.

Key achievements highlighted include her role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting the EU's Green Deal for climate neutrality by 2050, and maintaining a strong stance against Russia.

The Karlspreis, traditionally awarded on Ascension Day, is this year accompanied by a €1 million prize to support pro-European projects.

Von der Leyen, who has served as Commission President since 2019, expressed deep gratitude for the honor, calling it a testament to belief in Europe’s future.

The award underscores her pivotal role in navigating Europe through crises and strengthening its global voice.
