Wagenknecht's Coalition Conditions Stir Debate

Published: 2024-09-27

Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), has set clear conditions for potential coalition partners in the German states of Thüringen, Sachsen, and Brandenburg.

She demands that any coalition agreement must oppose the stationing of US intermediate-range missiles in Germany.

This stance is part of a broader appeal to the federal government to reduce military reliance and halt arms deliveries, particularly to Ukraine.

The BSW's strong performance in recent state elections makes them a key player in forming government majorities.

However, their foreign policy positions, especially against US missile deployment and military aid to Ukraine, pose challenges for potential alliances with the CDU and SPD.

Wagenknecht has also hinted at running as a top candidate in the next federal election, with a decision on a chancellor candidacy to be made closer to the election date.
