The world's oldest zoo sloth, Jan, has passed away at the age of 54 in Krefeld Zoo, Germany.
Born in the wild in 1969, Jan lived in Hamburg's Tierpark Hagenbeck until 1986 before moving to Krefeld Zoo, where he spent the last 38 years of his life.
Recognized by the Guinness World Records in 2021 as the oldest sloth in captivity, Jan was not only famous for his age but also for fathering 22 offspring with two female sloths, Lolita and Trine.
His legacy continues with Trine and their latest offspring, a male born in March 2024, who still reside in the zoo's rainforest house.
Jan's remarkable life and contribution to the sloth population have left a lasting impact on the zoo community.
