Aura" Crowned Youth Word of 2024

The term "Aura" has been chosen as the Youth Word of the Year 2024 by young people aged 11 to 20 in Germany.

Announced at the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair, "Aura" narrowly beat out "Talahon" and "Schere" in a vote organized by the Langenscheidt publishing house.

The word "Aura" is used to describe a person's charisma or special presence and is often employed humorously in youth language.

The term gained popularity in sports contexts after a 2020 New York Times article about a footballer.

"Talahon," referring to young men with stereotypical traits, and "Schere," a gaming term for admitting mistakes, took second and third place, respectively.

This annual selection has been a tradition since 2008, with the youth themselves voting since 2020.
