Bavaria Faces Pharmacy Crisis Amid Reforms

Published: 2024-08-06

In Bavaria, the number of pharmacies is declining, raising concerns among pharmacists about proposed reforms by the Federal Ministry of Health.

Over the past decade, the region has lost more than 500 pharmacies, with the current count at 2,741—the lowest since 1979. Critics argue that the new reform, which allows for the establishment of pharmacies without a pharmacist on-site, threatens the quality of patient care and undermines the traditional role of pharmacies.

Thomas Benkert, president of the Bavarian Chamber of Pharmacists, warns that this could lead to inadequate medication advice and support for patients with complex needs.

Health Minister Judith Gerlach has called for a revision of the proposed legislation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining accessible, quality pharmacy services, especially in rural areas.
