Berlin Braces for Major Kindergarten Strike

Published: 2024-09-26

Berlin is bracing for a major disruption as the unions Verdi and GEW have announced an indefinite strike in municipal kindergartens starting next week.

The strike, which affects about 35,000 children, has sparked a heated debate in the Berlin House of Representatives.

CDU faction leader Dirk Stettner criticized the unions' actions as "illegitimate, inappropriate, and irresponsible," arguing that the real crisis is not in the kindergartens but with Verdi itself.

Meanwhile, the Green Party's Marianne Burkert-Eulitz defended the unions, stating that the demands for better working conditions and reduced group sizes are justified.

The unions have been pushing for a collective agreement to improve conditions for educators, but negotiations with the Berlin Senate have stalled.

As the strike looms, parents are left scrambling for alternative childcare solutions, with no agreement on emergency care in sight.
