Court Upholds Conviction of Nazi Secretary

Published: 2024-08-20

The German Federal Court of Justice has upheld the conviction of Irmgard Furchner, a former secretary at the Stutthof concentration camp, for her role in aiding mass murder during the Nazi era.

The 99-year-old was sentenced to a two-year suspended juvenile sentence for assisting in the murder of 10,505 individuals and attempted murder in five cases.

This decision marks the finality of what is likely one of the last trials addressing Nazi war crimes.

Furchner worked as a stenographer for the camp's commandant from June 1943 to April 1945, during which time she was found to have facilitated the systematic killing of inmates.

Her defense argued that she was unaware of the atrocities occurring at the camp, but the court rejected this claim, affirming her culpability in the crimes.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the age of the defendant and the historical importance of addressing Nazi-era crimes.
