Debate on US Weapons in Germany Intensifies

Published: 2024-08-09

Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow has called for a parliamentary debate on the planned stationing of long-range US weapons in Germany, set to begin in 2026. He emphasized the need for a broader discussion on peace, as the plans have sparked criticism within parts of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

While some experts believe the Bundestag does not need to be consulted before the government's decision, public sentiment is mixed.

A recent survey revealed that half of Germans fear the deployment could escalate tensions with Russia.

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil defended the plans, stating they are essential for credible deterrence against potential Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock argued that investing in security is crucial in the current geopolitical climate, highlighting the need for a strong response to Russia's actions.
