Doubts Rise Over Rügen LNG Terminal

Published: 2024-08-06

The proposed LNG terminal on Rügen, Germany, faces increasing skepticism as the need for it comes into question.

Originally pushed forward by the federal government in response to dwindling gas supplies from Russia, local opposition has grown, citing environmental concerns and a lack of demand.

Constantin Zerger from the German Environmental Aid criticized the terminal as an unnecessary investment, noting that Germany's gas storage is currently full and the anticipated gas shortage has not materialized.

Despite receiving approval for operation, the terminal has yet to begin regular deliveries, with the operator, Deutsche Regas, citing unresolved coordination issues.

Meanwhile, Germany continues to rely heavily on gas imports from Norway, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with liquefied natural gas accounting for less than ten percent of its supply.

The future of the Rügen terminal remains uncertain as local and state officials question its viability.
