Dresden Faces Rising Flood Threat

Published: 2024-09-15

Dresden is bracing for severe flooding as the Elbe River continues to swell, prompting the city to declare flood warning level 2. The river's water level reached 501 centimeters on Sunday evening, with further increases expected.

The partial collapse of the Carolabrücke is exacerbating the situation, causing water to back up and potentially raising levels by 30 to 50 centimeters in certain areas.

Authorities anticipate declaring level 3 on Monday if the water surpasses 600 centimeters.

The peak is expected mid-week, with predictions indicating levels could reach the critical alarm stage 4, posing significant risks to life and property.

The situation is being closely monitored, with emergency preparations underway, especially given the recent heavy rains in neighboring countries like the Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria, which have worsened the flood outlook.
