Eastern Germany is leading the charge in Germany's renewable energy transition, according to Carsten Schneider, the government's commissioner for eastern German affairs.
Despite comprising only 15% of the population, the region contributes 27% of the country's renewable energy.
Schneider highlighted success stories during his summer tour, including plans for a large-scale hydrogen production facility in Lubmin and the successful transition of the PCK Schwedt refinery away from Russian oil.
The push for renewables faces challenges from opposition parties and local resistance to new projects.
However, with nearly 60% of Germany's electricity coming from renewable sources in the first half of 2024, the government remains committed to its energy transition goals, emphasizing the crucial role of eastern Germany in this endeavor.
