EU Approves Tariffs on Chinese E-Cars

Published: 2024-10-04

The European Union has decided to impose additional tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China, despite opposition from Germany.

The decision allows the European Commission to introduce tariffs of up to 35.3%, in addition to the standard 10% rate.

Germany, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, voted against the tariffs, but failed to gather enough support from other EU member states to block the measure.

The tariffs aim to counteract the substantial subsidies provided by China to its electric vehicle manufacturers, ensuring fair competition.

However, major German automakers like Mercedes, BMW, and VW have expressed concerns, urging for a negotiated solution with China to avoid potential negative impacts on the industry.

The European Commission continues to seek a diplomatic resolution with China, which could halt the tariffs even after their implementation.
